O'Sullivan Cup - 2024

Well done to Maxwell Rowe-Haynes (Celtic Sword), on today's win in this popular competition, enjoying its 35th outing.

Max got off to an early start with 20 points by the second round, closely followed by Luke Tait (Whitchurch) on 16 points, and Daniel Miller (Bristol White Eagle), and 2nd place last year, on 15 points .  Hot on their heels were previous winners, Rupert Nute (Whitchurch) and Nikolai Antoniou (Cardiff University), followed closely by Andrea Bertelli (Swansea).  In the third and fourth rounds, Max continued to edge ahead, still closely followed by Luke and Nik, with Nik creeping past Luke in the the fourth round.

Making progress quietly effectively throughout was previous winner, Adrian Stoneman (Cardiff), just behind Luke at the end of round four.  More furious fencing in the fifth (final) round, with Max in first place, and tying for second place, previous winners, Adrian & Nik, settled by a one-hit fence off, putting Nikolai in second place, by one point.

Often described as `fast and furious`, this was an exciting contest.  "Thank you for a lovely day’s fencing”, one entrant described it.  “Always great fencing different people, and everyone I spoke to said how much they enjoyed it !”

Thanks to Paul (Red) Redmond, and the O'Sullivan family for generously donating special prizes for the 35th O'Sullivan Cup; special thanks to David Hopes, local photographer, for his stunning photos, to Daniel Savin, and his fellow club members from Jersey, who risked an overseas outing to the Principality for this event, also to Jon & Ann Dawkins for their expert refereeing, and to Simon Corcoran for handling running repairs in the Armoury -  and last but not least to Cardiff Academy of Fencing for use of their salle.
