Sullivan Cup One hit mixed épée - Cardiff - 25 March 2007

Another highly successful event, the 18th cup, held again this year in Pentwyn Leisure Centre, which has proved a popular & convenient venue, with fencers arriving from as far afield as Ammanford and Bath.

‘One hit’ means that all the contestants have 3 rounds of one-hit bouts fencing each other – so this was 42 closely fought bouts of fast moving, and very competitive fencing.   Good humour and good spirits were the order of the day, as the organisers answered ‘real-world’ questions such as “What happens if we get a double hit, exactly on the 60 second mark ?” [answer – it counts as a double defeat ]

The half way mark saw Max Weedon just leading with 16 points, with Richard Hildick-Smith on 15, and Welsh Vet Bob Turner close behind on 13 points.   In the final rounds Richard pulled ahead to take the verdict for a second year, with Stephen Parker closing the gap to come in second.

Results:
First     : Richard Hildick-Smith (Bath Swords)
    Second: Stephen Parker (Cardiff)
    Third     : Max Weedon (Army)

Date for next year – 16 March 2008 (earlier because of Easter)
