Whitchurch Fencing Club
O'Sullivan Cup - 2026
Well done to Maxwell Rowe-Haynes (Celtic Sword), on his third successive victory in this popular competition, the 37th event in the series.
Off to a good start in the first round for leaders Max, Adrian Stoneman & Marc-Ashton Walford, and then with Adrian & Max both on 14 points by the second round, with Marc immediately behind. A close contest in the third round, with Marc & Adrian each on 20 points, and Max just ahead on 21 points. Max improved his lead in the final round coming 1st with 30 points, Adrian, 2nd, close behind on 29 points, and Marc 3rd, on 25 points.
Very good performances too from former winner, Rupert Nute, 4th with 24 points, and Andrea Bertelli & Jacob Pritchard, equal 5th on 23 points.
Often described as `fast and furious`, this was an exciting contest, with several contestants expressing their appreciation for it.
Thanks to Daniel Miller & David McKay from Bristol & Warminster for making the journey here; to Emilija Baraskina, the lone woman entrant, for taking part; to veteran fencer Tony Westacott who once again encouraged several of his club to take part - and last but not least to Jon & Ann Dawkins for their expert refereeing, to Simon Corcoran for handling running repairs in the Armoury, to Paul Stelb for pre-event weapons testing, and of course to Cardiff Academy of Fencing for use of their lovely salle.
Special thanks too to David Hopes, local photographer, who had taken some stunning photos in a previous year’s event, and who was able to take time out to attend the competition this year as well.
Last word from one of the competitors - "Wonderfully well run and organised ! " .
