Whitchurch Fencing Club

Team Epee 2023 - Whitchurch take Silver !

Round one was a tough fight against Cymru am Byth which we lost 29-45. Their team contained 2/3 of last years winners, and they went on to win overall this year, with 3 victories and no losses.

Our next fight was against Team Cwrw, with fencers coming from as far away as Bath and Aberystwyth. After a hesitant start, strong performances from Luke Tait and Rupert Nute turned a deficit into a lead, which was then maintained through to a 45-41 victory for Whitchurch.

The final fight was against Cardiff Academy, who were one of the favourites for the competition.  Nikolas Antoniou from Cyprus (2022 winner of the O’Sullivan Cup) was unable to fight due to injury, so his space was taken by their reserve, Neale Thomas, who had fenced for Whitchurch last year.

Andrea Bertelli put in an excellent performance - his best of the day, which he should be very proud of, and Whitchurch were able to capitalise on that to win 45-39. With 2 victories out of 3, this cemented silver for Whitchurch.

A good day was had by all, and we exceeded our expectations to get a great result !
