About the Whitchurch Shield

The Whitchurch Shield ran 1994-98 as the Whitchurch Summer Shield, an outdoor épée competition initially on Wenallt Common, but later at Dyffryn Gardens, - and it filled a gap in the calendar for those looking for fencing in the summer months.

Entering competitions is an important aspect of fencing, which helps to develop skills, along with regular club fencing and coaching.

With this in mind, the Shield was resuscitated in 2014 & 2015 to provide an Intermediate Epée event for both men & women.

.

ELIGIBILITY
   - open to Beginners and Intermediate fencers

Senior Welsh International fencers are not eligible ie, those who have represented Wales at épée in the Senior Team (at the Five Nations’ Tournament or the Commonwealth) in the last five years.   In addition, fencers who are ranked in the top 50 nationally (Senior Men's Epée and Senior Women's Epée) at the time of the competition are not eligible to enter the competition.

NB. Those who fence for Wales at Cadet, Junior, and Veteran level are still eligible to enter, as are those who have represented Wales regionally at the Winton Cup.
